Safety Assessment of Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein and Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten as Used in Cosmetics

چکیده
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel reviewed the product use, formulation and safety data on hydrolyzed wheat protein and hydrolyzed wheat gluten, which function as skin and hair conditioning agents. The Panel determined that data from clinical and laboratory studies was sufficient to demonstrate that these ingredients will not elicit Type 1 immediate hypersensitivity reactions in sensitized individuals, and will not induce sensitization when the polypeptide lengths of the hydrolysates do not exceed 30 amino acids. The Panel concluded that hydrolyzed wheat gluten and hydrolyzed wheat protein are safe in cosmetics when formulated to restrict peptides to a weight average of 3500 daltons (Da) or less.

In Japan, two patients who had been primary sensitized to hydrolyzed wheat protein (HWP) present in facial soap and subsequently experienced wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) after the ingestion of normal wheat products were reported in 2009 as first cases. Since that report, more than 1900 patients with such an allergy have been reported (through June 20, 2013) from various ...
متن کاملAcid Hydrolysis of Wheat Gluten Induces Formation of New Epitopes but Does Not Enhance Sensitizing Capacity by the Oral Route: A Study in “Gluten Free” Brown Norway Rats
BACKGROUND Acid hydrolyzed wheat proteins (HWPs) are used in the food and cosmetic industry as emulsifiers. Cases of severe food allergic reactions caused by HWPs have been reported. Recent data suggest that these reactions are caused by HWPs produced by acid hydrolysis. OBJECTIVES To examine the sensitizing capacity of gluten proteins per se when altered by acid or enzymatic hydrolysis relat...
متن کاملRhinoconjunctival sensitization to hydrolyzed wheat protein in facial soap and induce wheat-dependant exercise-induced anaphylaxis
Background Wheat protein is responsible for various kinds of allergic disease. Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) is one of the most important clinical phenotypes of adult wheat allergy. Relatively homogenous clinical and immunological presentations of this phenotype have already been described. More recently, some studies have shown that sensitization to hydrolyzed wheat prot...
متن کاملEnzymatic hydrolysis of gluten proteins changes the dose-response of oral sensitization, but not the gluten epitopes
Background Wheat gluten proteins are very complex proteins containing hundreds of components present as monomers, oligomers and polymers that by definition are not soluble in water. To improve utilization, gluten proteins can be hydrolyzed by enzymes or acid. This increases solubility and provide proteins with new functional properties. During the last decade, cases of severe allergic reaction ...
